Why is a Reliable Sump Pump Important?
Most basement waterproofing systems rely on a sump pump as the final mechanism to pump water out of
a basement.
The sump pump is the heart of the system and if the heart stops for any reason (including power outages), the system fails and your basement floods despite all the money you invested to dry it up. So if you are going to rely on a sump pump, make sure it's reliable.
Despite any stories you have heard over the years about homeowners getting flooded because their sump pump was on the blink again, today's sump equipment is better than ever and very reliable - that is if you have the right equipment.
With the wrong equipment, you'll be the one telling tales of woe about your pump failing and causing your basement to flood.
Which Sump Pump System is Best for Me?
Ohio Basement Systems offers all three of Basement Systems' patented sump pump systems: the best-in-industry TripleSafe, the SuperSump, and the specially designed SmartSump for crawl spaces.
We install all three of the following sump pump systems in Ohio:
TripleSafe - If you want your basement dry ALL of the time.
For peace-of-mind and to lower the statistical percentage that your
basement or crawl space will get wet as near zero as possible with a
sump pump system, the TripleSafe is the right model for you. With three
pumps to handle the various situations that can arise, the TripleSafe
is the way to go.
The TripleSafe can handle it all, from high flooding volumes, power outages, blown fuses, and primary sump pump failure. It even comes with a drain to help with plumbing failures in the home! Included with the installation are two cast-iron sump pumps- one 1/3 horsepower, one 1/2 horsepower, and a third battery backup pump capable of pumping out over 11,500 gallons on a single charge.
SuperSump - Best single-pump system for unfinished basements without storage on floor.
This system can be upgraded with the UltraSump battery backup sump pump for protection from power/pump failures.
The SuperSump is a cost-effective way to keep the basement dry under normal rain conditions. With a battery backup sump pump, it's best protected against power outages and sump pump failures.
Included with this installation is one 1/3 horsepower cast-iron Zoeller sump pump, with the optional battery backup capable of pumping out more than 11,500 gallons on one charge.
SmartSump - Best used with CleanSpace in a crawl space.
A sump pump system engineered to work in conjunction with the CleanSpace crawl space encapsulation system. See our page all about the SmartSump Sump Pump System for crawl spaces.
Like the TripleSafe and the SuperSump, the SmartSump includes a 1/3 horsepower cast-iron Zoeller sump pump. A battery backup sump pump is optional.
What Makes a Reliable Sump Pump System?
Besides the pump itself, there are many other parts that comprise a good, reliable sump pump system.
- Two pumps
Your primary pump can fail for many reasons, including clogging, excessive amounts of water on rare occasions, mechanical failure, etc., a second pump can save a basement from getting wet. - A Battery Backup Pump
What if the power goes out? You need to plan on the power going out one day - which usually happens in a big storm with rain, the pump coming unplugged, the circuit breaker tripping, or the primary pump failing (although a secondary pump protects against this occurrence). - A Sturdy Sump Pump Liner
You don't want your pump to clog in a muddy sump pit in the floor. You also don't want it in a small 5-gallon bucket that
will cause the pump to "short cycle" (turn on and off very quickly).
Instead, you need a sturdy sump liner or sump pump basin to protect your sump pump.
If a sump pump liner is too small, it runs out of water very quickly, causing the sump pump to turn off and on too often. This burns out the motor. If a sump pump liner is too large, then it will tend to go too deeply into the ground, pulling in more water than you need to pump and making the pump work harder. Our sump pump liners are the ideal size for keeping your system pumping at the best rate. - Air-Tight Sump Pump Cover with a Floor Drain
The sump pump basin should have an air-tight lid to prevent water from evaporating out of the sump hole into your basement, to prevent items from falling in that can clog the pump or switch, and to quiet the system. It's also a safety feature when it comes to children and pets who love to play in water. Depending on the cover, it can also make the installation look good, too. Instead of a necessary evil in your home, you have a thoughtfully engineered system. When you have a plumbing leak and the water floods out onto the basement floor, you'll want to use your sump hole to drain the water away. A sump lid with a floor drain is the answer. - A Stand for the Pump and a Check Valve
A CleanPump Stand elevates the pump off the bottom of the sump liner, allowing sediment,
mud or gravel that washes into the sump liner to settle to the
bottom of the sump liner without clogging or otherwise affecting the
pump. It also keeps the check valve and discharge line clean.
When sump pump systems clog, they fail. And if they fail, your basement will flood. Sump pump stands help to ensure that your basement is dry all the time! - Pump Alarms
How would you know if your sump pump has failed and you were in danger of being flooded? Unless you have an alarm (such as the WaterWatch Alarm ),
the answer is, when your basement is already flooded! A battery-powered
alarm that automatically sounds off when the water reaches a level
above the point where the pump(s) should normally turn on is essential.
How will you hear the alarm if you're not home? New models of our sump pump alarms can even be hooked up to your home security system! If your sump pump fails, you'll get a phone call- before the basement floods!
Sump Pump Warranty
The sump pump systems installed by Ohio Basement Systems are the industry-best Zoeller sump pumps. These pumps come with a 1-year manufacturer's warranty. As part of our Annual Maintenance program, we check the pumps and clean the sump pump liner to help ensure that the pump is in good working order. We do always recommend the TripleSafe sump pump system, as we know that in a single-pump system that a homeowner is a single failure away from getting wet.
A Sump Pump with a Lifetime Warranty?
No sump pump manufacturer offers a lifetime warranty on their pumps -
and with good reason. A lifetime warranty doesn't make a pump better.
Some irresponsible contractors will tell you there is a lifetime
warranty (or many years) on their pump - "free replacements forever" -
to seduce you to buy their whole basement waterproofing solution. Ask
yourself, "How do I know when to call for my free replacement?" The
answer is when the pump has failed and your basement is flooded - after
it's too late!
